Psoriasis Symptoms

There are millions of people who are suffering daily with the effects of the condition known as psoriasis. This is a condition affecting people of all backgrounds, all walks of life.  Psoriasis sufferers will certainly see differences in their individual conditions, but psoriasis symptoms are pretty much the same.   Knowing what to look for to determine if you have psoriasis and how bad your condition may be is a key step to battling this affliction – one which not only takes a physical toll, but a psychological one thanks to stress and anxiety over your predicament.

Let’s start by figuring out what can cause this condition, and the psoriasis symptoms that come along with it.  If you have this disease, you may have gotten it due to a number of factors – from change in climate, to various other illnesses...even to medications you might be taking for conditions you may suffer from.  It appears that psoriasis is heavily based on a certain white blood cell within your immune system; this cell is commonly referred to as a T-cell.  Issues like stress, alcohol, and perhaps weather conditions can trigger onsets of psoriasis symptoms in a person.

So what are some common psoriasis symptoms??  Any outbreak of this condition is usually accompanied by scaling or skin flaking.  Often, the skin is reddened in certain patches (in some cases, severely), and the skin will often crack and could bleed or burn.  Itching is also fairly common in psoriasis sufferers.  Other symptoms that may occur include stiff joints, sometimes swollen joints.  Your fingernails and toenails can also be affected by the affliction.  Those nails may experience tiny pitting taking place in the affected nail(s).  If you are a sufferer of psoriasis, symptoms might perhaps include manifestations of the condition on typically exposed skin such as arms, hands, and feet.  You might even see the disease manifest itself on the back, or even the scalp.  Sometimes there will be inflammation and in some cases, your psoriasis may be accompanied by a form of arthritis.

To get your psoriasis symptoms treated, there are several different avenues you can explore.  These include topical creams, like cortisone, in mild to moderate cases.  Items such as steroid-based creams and certain moisturizers can alleviate burning and irritation issues.  In addition, getting yourself into the sunlight and exposing the skin to ultraviolet light in small doses can help alleviate psoriasis symptoms.  Also, finding ways to handle stressful situations can aid the treatment process – which unfortunately, may be a lifetime, as there is no known cure for the condition.  Treatment can only control the disease – it may still return at some point.

In getting treatment, remember that any treatments that are administered by physicians will likely be done on a trial-and-error basis, and that they will be done on the basis of the patient’s gender, age, and health, among other factors.  Consult your doctor about how best to go about treatment of your condition.

Psoriasis symptoms can be a heavy burden on people in their daily lives.  Yet there is hope in getting effective treatments – and science is pressing forward, looking to the day when this condition can be fully cured...and even prevented.
